Endodontic Treatment and Endodontic Surgery
What is an Endodontist?
An Endodontist is a specialist in root canal therapy dealing
with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases of the
dental pulp. He or she must complete a two- year postgraduate
program in advanced training specializing in Endodontics.
What is Endodontic Treatment?
After your diagnosis is made by an Endodontist, access through
the enamel and dentin is made after which the diseased or
traumatized blood vessels and nerves are removed. In its place
an inert biocompatible filling material is inserted and molded
into the space formerly occupied by the blood vessels and
nerves. A temporary filling is placed where access was made
into the root canal. Your Endodontist will inform you when to
return to your general dentist for the final restoration to
replace the temporary filling. Post operative instructions will
be given to you after your procedure.
What is Endodontic Surgery?
On rare occasions a root canal treated tooth may not heal. In
such cases there are other surgical options that could prolong
the life of the tooth.
What is Post Operative Care?
Verbal and written instructions are given to each patient after
the procedure. The patient should not chew on the side where treatment was
performed until your general dentist completes the final
restoration to protect the tooth from fracture. It is normal to
experience some minor discomfort after the procedure. A
prescription will be provided if necessary.
Will I feel pain during the procedure?
Patients are made numb with local anesthesia to ensure that no
pain is experienced during the procedure.
All patients are required by law to complete an accurate medical
and dental health history form. Dr. Browdy will discuss your
medical history with you after you are brought into the
treatment room. One or more assistants will always be with you
throughout the entire procedure. After diagnostic images are
taken a complete and comprehensive evaluation and discussion of
treatment options will be explained to you. Patients under the
age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
